Book/Magazine

Part zine, part journal, part archive: The Turnaround

Washington Women in Jazz is pleased to expand into the literary world with its development of The Turnaround, a new literary magazine highlighting the beauty and living history of our community. The Turnaround aims to amplify a cross-section of our culture: reviews, interviews, and detailed academic histories of notable women in jazz will run alongside pieces that would be at home in a cut-and-paste zine. The Turnaround will release its first volume in March 2023.

“Artists lead the charge on actively being a part of the community. Always. Being able to have the space, and then being able to document, consistently, the things that we're doing in this community… we're creating ourselves, and creating our community, on the spot. Spontaneous community creation. That's, to me, the biggest power of jazz, and a huge power upon which the DC jazz community is totally well-placed to expand.”
